Jaen province has the largest area of protected wilderness in the whole of Spain. The natural wealth of this area of Andalusia is immense. There are a number of natural parks here; Despeñaperros Natural Park, Sierra de Andujar, Sierras de Cazorla, Segura, Villas Natural Park, and the Sierra Mágina. Within the park boundaries you’ll find many pretty Andalusian villages all steeped in culture and tradition. Bull running is particularly popular here and has been so since the 18th century.
The city of Jaen is full of picturesque charm with a wealth of history and architecture to explore. Two places you must visit are the Cathedral and the Arab Baths.
Jaen’s cathedral is an impressive structure. It completely dominates the city and skyline. You’ll find it right in the heart of the old city, surrounded by a maze of narrow, winding streets. It’s massive. The cathedral’s towers are 26 metres high. Inside, they have an 18th century choir playing. It’s well worth a visit.
The Arab Baths were discovered in 1913 and declared a national monument in 1917. They’re the best preserved baths in the whole of Spain. Admission is free. The visit also includes several museums.
In September, Jaen hosts the “Feria de la Divina Pastora”. This is a deeply religious celebration. It starts at dawn. First they have a mass, then there is a waving of banners procession by the “brotherhood of Shepherds”- a religious group established back in the 16th century. During the night there’s an outdoor fiesta with plenty of wine, food, singing and dancing.
The bullfighting season finishes at the end of October. It’s marked by dramatic bullfights on horseback as well as colourful carriage displays. |
