Tarifa is on of the best spots in Andalusia for wind and kite surfing. This is where the Atlantic meets the Mediteranean at the most southern tip of Europe. Two strong winds (Levante and Poñiente) battle against each other creating powerful sailing conditions.
There are plenty of shops and schools in Tarifa where you can rent out, or buy equipment and also get expert tuition.
Windsurfing:
When it comes to windsurfing, Tarifa is for advanced amateurs and professionals. This is basically because sometimes it’s just too perilously windy.
Tarifa holds several national and international windsurfing championships; the Ballentines Championship and the Toro Andaluz race. These takes place during Easter Week, when the season really kicks off.
Beginners should avoid windsurfing late in the evenings it is getting dark. If the winds are very strong make sure you have someone watching you from the shoreline. Strong Levante winds can carry you out to sea and if you’re not very experienced you might have difficulty getting back.
Kite surfing:
Kite surfing is one of the latest extreme sports. It basically involves racing over water on a short surfboard propelled by a kite. Experts can reach speeds of up to 80 kms per on the water and perform stunts taking them out of the water by up to 40 metres!! It’s great to watch; an excellent spectator sport.
The Red Bull Skyride competition takes place every year in Tarifa during the last week in April. It’s on Los Lances beach, between Tarifa and Arte Vida.
Expert kite surfers from all over the world flock to Tarifa to pit themselves against the strong Poñiente and Levante winds. It’s a full week of action; spectacular stunts and showmanship with non stop partying at night. Thousands of spectators attend. .
Wind and kite surfing are both incredibly exhilarating sports, with a lot to offer. All age groups can try them. |
